Elia and the Elephant presents an immediate visual paradox: a child pulling on a rope while a massive, realistic elephant is suspended in the air. The impossibility of the action is at the heart of the work. Bombardieri uses this contradiction to talk about the “weight” that humans often have to deal with, even when it seems disproportionate to their strength.
The elephant, modeled with great attention to detail, appears heavy and real, in contrast to the small figure of the child.
